8 key ideas, each explained in our own words.

Propaganda

  1. IDEA 1

    A hidden few shape opinion

Bernays, often called a founder of public relations, argues that in modern democracies the opinions and habits of the public are shaped by a small number of people working behind the scenes. He calls this an invisible government.

  2. IDEA 2

    He saw propaganda as necessary

Bernays argues that in a complex society, organised persuasion is needed to help people make choices. He presents it as a normal part of democratic life rather than something sinister.

  3. IDEA 3

    Group psychology guides persuasion

Bernays draws on psychology, including ideas from his uncle Sigmund Freud, to explain how groups think and act. Understanding these patterns, he argues, allows opinion to be shaped. In his view, knowing how people react helps persuaders choose the right appeal.
