The Power of Now

  1. IDEA 1

You are not the voice in your head

Most of us identify with the endless commentary in our minds. Noticing the voice, rather than being it, is the start of freedom.

  2. IDEA 2

The present is all there is

Life only ever happens now. Past and future exist as thoughts; worry and regret live there, while peace lives in this moment.

  3. IDEA 3

    The pain-body

Old emotional pain can flare up and take over. Watching it with awareness, instead of feeding it with thought, slowly dissolves it.

A New Earth

  1. IDEA 1

Humanity needs a shift in consciousness

Tolle argues that human beings are suffering because they are trapped in ego-based thinking. He believes a shift in consciousness, an awakening from identification with thoughts, is now possible for many people.

  2. IDEA 2

The ego is a false self

Tolle describes the ego as a false sense of self built from thoughts, possessions, roles and stories. The ego constantly seeks more and feels threatened. Tolle presents this false self as the source of much unhappiness that people do not question.

  3. IDEA 3

    We identify with things

Tolle argues that the ego identifies with form, such as possessions, appearance and status. This leads to endless wanting and fear of loss. Tolle argues that tying our worth to what we own leaves us always worried about losing it.
