16 key ideas across 2 books, each explained in our own words.
The Beginning of Infinity
- IDEA 1
Progress can continue forever
Deutsch argues that the discovery of how to create good explanations, during the Enlightenment, began a process of progress that has no necessary limit. He calls this the beginning of infinity.
- IDEA 2
Good explanations are hard to vary
Deutsch argues that a good explanation is one whose details cannot easily be changed while still explaining the facts. Myths, by contrast, can be altered freely without losing anything. A hard-to-vary explanation is more likely to be true.
- IDEA 3
Problems are soluble
Deutsch argues that every problem caused by the laws of nature can, in principle, be solved with the right knowledge. Problems are inevitable, but so is the possibility of solving them.
The Fabric of Reality
- IDEA 1
Four theories explain reality
Deutsch argues that four deep theories together form our best understanding of the world. They are quantum physics, the theory of knowledge, the theory of computation and the theory of evolution.
- IDEA 2
Explanations matter more than predictions
Deutsch argues that science aims to explain the world, not just to predict results. A good theory tells us why things happen, not only what will happen. Prediction without understanding is like a recipe with no reason behind it.
- IDEA 3
Shadow photons imply other worlds
Deutsch uses the double-slit experiment to argue that interference patterns are caused by invisible shadow particles. He concludes that these belong to parallel universes in a vast multiverse. Deutsch treats these other worlds as real, not as a mathematical trick.
