The Compound Effect

  1. IDEA 1

Small choices plus time equal results

Hardy's core formula is that small, smart choices, made consistently over time, produce radical results. Like interest on savings, each tiny decision adds up, and the effect becomes visible only after a long period.

  2. IDEA 2

    The magic penny shows compounding

Hardy uses the example of a penny doubled every day for a month, which ends up worth far more than a large lump sum. The example shows how compounding starts slowly and then grows explosively.

  3. IDEA 3

Track behaviour to see the truth

Hardy recommends tracking one area of life closely, such as spending or eating, by writing down every action. Tracking reveals habits we normally ignore and makes it easier to change them.
