How Democracies Die
- IDEA 1
Democracies can die slowly
Levitsky and Ziblatt argue that democracies today rarely end through coups. Instead, elected leaders gradually weaken democratic institutions from within, often while claiming to defend them. In their view, the damage can be hard to notice because each step seems lawful.
- IDEA 2
Parties should keep out extremists
The authors argue that political parties have a duty to act as gatekeepers, stopping dangerous candidates from gaining power. When they fail, democracy is at risk. In their account, those who act as filters help keep unfit leaders from the highest posts.
- IDEA 3
Warning signs can be spotted
The authors offer signs of authoritarian behaviour, such as rejecting democratic rules, denying opponents' legitimacy, tolerating violence and limiting civil liberties. In their view, noticing such signs early gives citizens and parties time to respond.
