Primal Leadership
- IDEA 1
Leaders shape emotions
Goleman, Boyatzis and McKee argue that a leader's main job is emotional: creating a positive emotional climate. Because emotions spread through groups, leaders' moods strongly affect their teams' performance. They suggest that a leader should therefore pay close attention to their own feelings.
- IDEA 2
Resonance helps teams
The authors describe resonant leaders, who create positive emotional connections and energise teams. Dissonant leaders create negativity. In the authors' view, a leader who is in tune with people helps them feel hopeful and motivated, and it shows in the team's results.
- IDEA 3
Emotions are contagious
The authors explain that emotions spread quickly between people. Leaders' emotions have special influence. In the authors' view, a leader's mood is picked up quickly by others, so a calm or cheerful leader can lift the group.
