Economics Rules
- IDEA 1
Economics is a set of models
Rodrik argues that economics is best understood not as one grand theory but as a collection of models. Each model is a simplified story that explains part of reality, like a map designed for a particular purpose.
- IDEA 2
Models are like fables
Rodrik compares economic models to fables: short stories that teach a lesson by stripping away detail. A good model is simple enough to understand yet captures an important cause and effect.
- IDEA 3
The skill is choosing models
Because different models fit different situations, Rodrik argues, the economist's real skill lies in deciding which model applies to the case at hand. Using the wrong model leads to bad advice even if the model is correct in its own setting.
The Globalization Paradox
- IDEA 1
Markets need governments to work
Rodrik argues that markets cannot function without strong rules, courts and public institutions. Because these institutions are mostly national, deeply global markets create tension with the governments that make markets possible.
- IDEA 2
We cannot have everything at once
Rodrik's central idea is a trilemma: a country cannot simultaneously have hyperglobalisation, full democracy and national sovereignty. At most it can choose two of the three, so pursuing deep integration means sacrificing either democratic choice or national control.
- IDEA 3
The gold standard sacrificed democracy
Rodrik describes the gold standard era, when countries kept fixed links to gold and open finance. Governments had to accept painful recessions to keep the system, which worked while ordinary people had little political voice.
