The Emergency

  1. IDEA 1

A journalist who lived through it

Kapoor, a journalist, writes about the Emergency of 1975 to 1977, partly from personal experience. Members of her own family were among those arrested, giving the book a personal as well as historical view.

  2. IDEA 2

A court ruling set it off

Kapoor explains how the Allahabad High Court found Indira Gandhi guilty of electoral malpractice in 1975. Soon after, facing protests and pressure to resign, she declared an Emergency. Few expected what followed.

  3. IDEA 3

    Opponents were arrested overnight

On the night the Emergency was declared, thousands of opposition leaders and activists were arrested. Kapoor describes how many were held under preventive detention laws without trial. Families often did not know where they were.
