Man and His Symbols

  1. IDEA 1

    The unconscious speaks through symbols

Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, wrote this book with colleagues to explain his ideas to general readers. He argues that a large part of the mind is unconscious, and that it communicates with us through symbols, especially in dreams.

  2. IDEA 2

    Dreams carry meaning

Jung argues that dreams are not random but messages from the unconscious. Understanding them can help people grow. He believed a dream often shows something the dreamer has not yet noticed in waking life, so it is worth taking seriously instead of dismissing.

  3. IDEA 3

    Symbols point beyond words

Jung explains that symbols express ideas that cannot be fully captured in words. They appear in dreams, myths and art. So a symbol in a dream or a story may mean much more than the object itself, and its meaning cannot be explained away easily.
