Just Mercy

  1. IDEA 1

A lawyer fought for the condemned

Stevenson describes founding the Equal Justice Initiative to defend people on death row and others treated unjustly by the American legal system. Many of his clients were poor, Black or mentally ill, and had received inadequate legal help.

  2. IDEA 2

    An innocent man was condemned

Stevenson tells the story of Walter McMillian, a Black man sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit. Stevenson spent years fighting to prove his innocence. Stevenson presents this as a clear example of injustice.

  3. IDEA 3

    Evidence was ignored

Stevenson describes how prosecutors relied on false testimony and ignored evidence of McMillian's innocence. Racial bias shaped the case. Stevenson shows that a case built on weak proof can still send a person to prison for a very long time.
