The Elegant Universe

  1. IDEA 1

    Two great theories clash

Greene explains that general relativity describes gravity and large things, while quantum mechanics describes tiny particles. Both work brilliantly, but they contradict each other at the smallest scales. Resolving this is a central goal.

  2. IDEA 2

Everything may be made of strings

Greene presents string theory, which suggests that the smallest building blocks of nature are tiny vibrating strings of energy. Different vibrations would appear as different particles. These strings are far too small to see.

  3. IDEA 3

    Vibrations create particles

Greene compares strings to violin strings that make different notes. In string theory, each pattern of vibration corresponds to a particle with its own mass and charge. The idea is both simple and powerful.

The Fabric of the Cosmos

  1. IDEA 1

    Space and time are puzzling

Greene asks what space and time really are, questions that seem simple but have puzzled physicists for centuries. He takes readers through the major theories that have changed our understanding of them.

  2. IDEA 2

    A spinning bucket raises questions

Greene describes Newton's bucket experiment, in which water in a spinning bucket curves upward. He uses it to explore whether space is a real thing or just a relation between objects.

  3. IDEA 3

    Now differs for different observers

Greene explains that, according to Einstein, observers moving differently disagree about which events happen at the same time. This suggests that past, present and future may all be equally real.

Until the End of Time

  1. IDEA 1

    Everything moves towards disorder

Greene explains that entropy, or disorder, tends to increase across the universe. Yet within this overall trend, pockets of order such as stars, planets and living beings can form. Order is local and temporary, while disorder grows overall.

  2. IDEA 2

    Order can rise from disorder

Greene argues that structures like stars and cells form because they release heat and disorder into their surroundings. This lets complex things appear without breaking the laws of physics. The disorder sent outward more than pays for the order that forms.

  3. IDEA 3

    Life emerged from chemistry

Greene describes theories about how life began from non-living chemicals on the early Earth. Evolution then built ever more complex living things through natural selection. Over a very long time, small changes added up to the variety of life we see today.
