India Since Independence

  1. IDEA 1

    Freedom brought a strong legacy

Chandra and his co-authors argue that independent India inherited values from the freedom struggle: democracy, secularism, civil liberties and a commitment to the poor. These ideals, they suggest, guided the early republic.

  2. IDEA 2

    The Constitution set democratic foundations

The authors describe the making of the Constitution, which guaranteed universal adult franchise and fundamental rights. They see it as a remarkable achievement for a poor, diverse and newly independent country.

  3. IDEA 3

Princely states became part of India

The authors explain how hundreds of princely states were integrated into India after independence. Persuasion, negotiation and sometimes pressure brought them into the union within a few years. Kashmir and Hyderabad were the hardest cases.

India's Struggle for Independence

  1. IDEA 1

    A mass movement won independence

Chandra and his co-authors argue that India's freedom struggle was one of the largest mass movements in history. Millions of ordinary people, not just leaders, took part through protest, boycott and sacrifice.

  2. IDEA 2

    Early nationalists exposed colonial economics

The authors show how early leaders like Dadabhai Naoroji analysed how British rule drained India's wealth. This economic critique, they argue, laid the intellectual foundation of Indian nationalism. It showed that colonial rule was not a blessing.

  3. IDEA 3

    Moderates built the groundwork

The early Congress, often called the Moderates, used petitions and speeches. The authors argue that they educated public opinion and created a national platform, even though their methods were cautious.
