The Smartest Guys in the Room

  1. IDEA 1

A celebrated company hid a fraud

McLean and Elkind tell the story of Enron, an energy company once praised as one of the most innovative in America. Behind its success, executives used accounting tricks to hide debt and losses until the company collapsed in 2001.

  2. IDEA 2

    Leaders believed they were smartest

The authors describe Enron's leaders, including Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, who believed they were smarter than everyone else. Arrogance shaped the culture. In the authors' account, this belief made them dismiss warnings and treat doubters as people who simply did not understand.

  3. IDEA 3

    Accounting tricks inflated profits

Enron used mark-to-market accounting to record expected future profits immediately. This made results look better than reality. In the authors' account, the method let the company show profits on paper long before any money had actually come in.
