Imagined Communities

  1. IDEA 1

    Nations are imagined communities

Anderson argues that a nation is an imagined community. Members will never meet most of their fellow citizens, yet they feel a deep bond with them, and this shared sense of belonging is what makes a nation.

  2. IDEA 2

    Print created shared worlds

Anderson argues that print capitalism, the spread of printed books and newspapers in common languages, helped people imagine themselves as part of a nation. Readers felt connected to others reading the same texts.

  3. IDEA 3

    Old communities declined

Anderson explains that nationalism grew as older ways of belonging, such as religious communities and royal dynasties, lost their hold. In his view, this left room for new forms of shared identity to grow.
