A young astronomer's great work
Aryabhata wrote the Aryabhatiya around 499 CE, saying he was twenty-three at the time. He worked at Kusumapura, near modern Patna, and his short text became one of the most influential works of Indian mathematics and astronomy.

The text is compact verse
The Aryabhatiya is written in short verses that pack a great deal of information. It is divided into sections covering numbers, mathematics, time and the movement of heavenly bodies. Later scholars wrote long commentaries on it.
- IDEA 3
Numbers were written by place value
Aryabhata used a system based on place value, where a digit's position shows its value. This approach helped make large calculations easier and supported later Indian mathematics. Indian numerals later spread worldwide.
