Dopamine Nation

  1. IDEA 1

    We live amid overabundance

Lembke, a psychiatrist who treats addiction, argues that modern life offers endless easy rewards, from phones to food to drugs. This constant supply of pleasure, she suggests, is making many people more anxious and less satisfied.

  2. IDEA 2

Pleasure and pain share a balance

Lembke describes a seesaw in the brain: when pleasure pushes one side down, the brain pushes back towards pain to restore balance. Repeated pleasure shifts the balance so we need more just to feel normal.

  3. IDEA 3

Too much pleasure leads to pain

Over time, the brain's push-back grows stronger. Lembke explains that heavy use of any rewarding substance or behaviour can leave people feeling worse between hits, which drives them to seek more.
