Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother

  1. IDEA 1

    A mother describes strict parenting

Chua, a Yale law professor, writes a memoir about raising her two daughters using what she calls Chinese-style parenting, with strict rules and very high expectations. She contrasts it with more permissive Western approaches.

  2. IDEA 2

    Expectations were very high

Chua describes demanding top grades and hours of daily music practice from her daughters. She believed children could achieve more than they thought. In her account, she saw high demands as a form of respect and faith in her children.

  3. IDEA 3

    Two daughters responded differently

Chua describes how her older daughter, Sophia, largely accepted the approach, while her younger daughter, Lulu, resisted fiercely. In her account, the same approach worked very differently on two children with different personalities.
