Linked

  1. IDEA 1

    Networks are everywhere

Barabási argues that many systems, from the internet to cells and societies, are networks of connected nodes. Studying their structure reveals common rules that explain how they grow and behave.

  2. IDEA 2

    Early theories assumed randomness

Barabási describes the work of mathematicians Paul Erdős and Alfréd Rényi, who studied randomly connected networks. Real networks, he argues, turned out to be different. Their model treated every link as equally likely, which real networks did not follow.

  3. IDEA 3

    The world is small

Barabási explains that in many networks, any two nodes are linked by surprisingly few steps. This is the small-world effect. This is why a message can cross a huge network in just a few hops.
