6 key ideas, each explained in our own words.

Vivekachudamani (Crest-Jewel of Discrimination)

  1. IDEA 1

    Three rare gifts

Being born human, longing for freedom and finding a wise guide are all rare. Having them is a reason to use this life well.

  2. IDEA 2

A rope mistaken for a snake

In dim light we panic at a rope we think is a snake. Ignorance works the same way: we take the passing for the permanent and suffer for it.

  3. IDEA 3

    What a seeker needs

Shankara lists the seeker's qualities: telling the lasting from the passing, dispassion, calm and self-control, and a real longing for freedom.
